Description of action
A large part of the Afghanistan is mountainous and the temperatures inside poorly insulated and badly heated buildings reaches sometimes no more than 5°C in winter. It is also the case in hospitals situated in the most mountainous regions. In 2002, GERES decided to take part in the reconstruction of Afghanistan, focusing on the introduction of techniques and skills to save energy in buildings.
After demonstrating the relevance of the concept by constructing 8 pilot buildings between 2003 and 2005, GERES and its partners launched a programme to improve energy efficiency in the building sector. In 2009, 240 buildings have been rebuilt or renovated. During winter, the indoor temperatures are increased by 10°C, stabilizing around 15°C. At the same time, trainings of afghan professionnals allow technological transfer of passive solar techniques.
A guide has just been published to illustrate the techniques of energy efficiency in public buildings, so that rebuilding Afghanistan can go hand-in-hand with energy management.
