Description of action
In Cambodia, firewood supplies 80% of energy needs. Its intensive use threatens forest resources whereas the latter could, if properly managed, be a source of renewable energy. In addition, this use of biomass causes substantial emissions of CO2, the main man-made greenhouse gas which is largely responsible for climate change, into the atmosphere.
New Lao Stove

In this context, the GERES launched in 1998 its improved cookstove, named the
"New Lao Stove" (NLS). The stove allows to reduce charcoal consumption by 30%. NLS production reached more than
1,000,000 units sold by 2010. The millionth stove sold marked a great achievement in the fight against climate change and air pollution.
Additionally, between 2003 and 2009, the Voluntary Carbon Market certified that 769,598 tons of CO2 emissions were avoided thanks to the NLS project.
Neang Kongrey Stove
GERES has also developed the Neang Kongrey Stove (NKS), designed for rural disadvantaged populations. It allows to reduce by 25% the charcoal consumption. Cheaper, it represents a good alternative regarding inefficient stoves. The NKS is produced by families and micro-businesses and is distributed nationally. Since the beginning of the project, 179 089 NKS have been sold on the Cambodian market.
