This financial institution forms the core of the French official development aid system. Its mission is to participate in funding development, essentially in poor countries . The AFD supports public authorities, the private sector and local voluntary sector networks in implementing economic and social projects on five continents and in the French overseas territories. Its work in favour of economic growth and environmental protection fits directly within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This energy and environment institute is a subsidiary of the International Organization of La Francophonie.
