It is upported financially by the Swedish Development Cooperation with Mali, the French Development Agency (AFD), the Prince Albert II de Monaco Foundation, the Nexans Foundation and Synergie Solaire.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; custom_padding_last_edited=&#8221;on|tablet&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25.3&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||0px|||&#8221; custom_padding_tablet=&#8221;|20px||20px&#8221; custom_padding_phone=&#8221;&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221;][et_pb_row module_class=&#8221;content-page-article&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25.3&#8243; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;768px&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;|auto||568px||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;10px|||||&#8221; saved_tabs=&#8221;all&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25.3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; header_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; header_2_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; header_2_line_height=&#8221;1.3em&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px|0px|0px|0px||&#8221; custom_padding_tablet=&#8221;|0px||0px&#8221; custom_padding_phone=&#8221;&#8221; custom_padding_last_edited=&#8221;on|tablet&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Context and challenges<\/h2>\n<p>Geres and its local partners (local authorities and farmer organizations) have launched various initiatives in response to the energy needs of stakeholders in the territory, offering cost-effective, sustainable alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>These experiences gave rise to the concept of the Green Business Areas, an integrated solution supplying electricity to small enterprises, co-operatives and rural services and acting as a rural business accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>In energy-poor areas of the Sahel like Mali, where the rate of rural electrification rarely exceeds 20%, decentralized energy solutions (micro power stations, mini-grids) can, by promoting local processing, offer alternative ways of supporting the development of both basic services and agricultural and craft value chains.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in environments where education systems are lacking, where tensions, social inequalities and youth under-employment are rife, access to electricity cannot on its own systematically generate inclusive economic development.<\/p>\n<p>By establishing a global ecosystem conducive to the development of rural entrepreneurship, the GBA can then serve as a development tool for rural territories, creating value and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity production is based on locally available renewable energy sources, which primarily means solar in the Sahelian zone. Sized according to the needs of rural businesses, the GBA provides an attractive technical and economic model for the private sector and rural electrification operators.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.geres.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/geres.projets.mali_.acces_.energie.tous_.article.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25.3&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;29px||41px|||&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.7.7&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;||39px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Objectives and solutions<\/h2>\n<p>The project makes an active contribution to Geres scaling up strategy in the rollout of decentralized solutions.<\/p>\n<p>It focuses on four key operational priorities:<\/p>\n<p>1.<strong> Increasing renewable energy production in rural territories according to the needs of productive users of energy,<\/strong> through support for decentralized clean energy solutions, particularly Green Business Areas, promoting sustainable management and governance systems.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Supporting very small rural enterprises and community groups to maximize the economic<\/strong> (added value, jobs) and social (food security, decent work, inclusion) benefits of energy access and develop the local economic fabric.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Establishing the conditions for ongoing management of the GBAs<\/strong> by setting up a social enterprise and mobilizing various funding sources.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Documenting and circulating the project results to the stakeholders<\/strong> and disseminating the lessons learned and benefits at local, regional and national level to stimulate wider-scale replication.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.geres.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/geres.projets.mali_.acces_.energie.tous_.article-3.jpg&#8221;
