Climate Vulnerability and Resilience Assessment in the Central Highlands of Afghanistan

Country / Year

Afghanistan / 2017

Client

French Development Agency (AFD)

Summary and Geres role

Geres operational areas in Afghanistan, where it has been established for some years, include the Central Highlands, a mountainous region with deep valleys which experiences extremely harsh winters. The three-year Central Highlands programme, directed by Geres and implemented in consortium with MADERA & Solidarités International, aims in particular to establish a link between the field projects and the development of climate change- related activities.

This CVRA covers six districts where the consortium works in the region: Yakawlang 1 and 2, Hisa-e-Awal-e-Behsud, Marzak-e-Behsud, Saighan and Kahmard. Its objective is to provide the most complete analysis  possible of current and future vulnerability to the effects of climate change and their consequences for the livelihoods of the local communities. To this end, the analysis draws on the most accurate climate data available, combined with use of the local communities’ perceptions and testimony.
